A Devotion to Love: The Word, the Ritual, and the Tattoo That Marked My 2025 Intention

Sometimes, a single word arrives with such clarity, it feels like it’s been waiting for us all along. In a sacred fire ritual in Bali, my word for 2025 came through: Devotion. This is the story of how that moment led to my very first tattoo — and a lifelong vow to let Love lead.

It was in Bali in November when my word for 2025 came to me: devotion.

I had been pondering the possibility of getting my very first tattoo while there.

However, as was the case my entire life: as much as I celebrate anyone else adorning their bodies with art and things that are meaningful to them, I couldn’t think of anything I knew I’d personally want permanently on my skin.

That was until I was participating in a fire puja ritual, guided by a wonderful Balinese priestess, chanting and tossing things into the fire we wanted to release and prayers we wanted to offer up.

I realized my heart’s deepest desire:

…to release all that keeps me separate from Love/Spirit/the Universe/Inner Wisdom/whatever name you call the Sacred guidance that is here to support us, teach us, buoy us, illuminate the highest path in all situations and light every step of the way…

…here to help us harvest wisdom from pain and make way for the magical, mystical, and miraculous, to keep our hearts open, to find creative soul-utions to anything…

…to keep us aligned with our essence, with who we truly are, with what’s possible and available, and with how we can best contribute to the greater whole — and experience authentic joy along the way.

And, with that, it dawned on me:

The one thing I would easily and effortlessly commit to for the rest of my life: letting Spirit lead.

Two days later, with one of my dearest friends by my side, I got my first tattoo: a small heart with wings in my favorite color, purple.

I now look down at my wrist, palm open and outstretched, and it connects me to my intention, not just for this year but for my life:

…to let Love lead, to follow the wisdom of my heart, to preserve time and space to both hear and follow my intuition, and to go willingly and devotedly in whatever direction the Sacred points, day by day, moment by moment.

So grateful for all the diverse opportunities we have to set intentions and anchor them into our minds, hearts, spirits – and bodies 💗
